Managed Hosting — Because Slow Hosting Costs You Customers
Overview
Hosting is invisible until it is the problem. Cheap shared hosting produces a slow first response, and no amount of image compression or front-end tuning recovers time lost before the server starts replying. It is the one performance problem you cannot fix in the browser.
Server response time
The number front-end work cannot touch. Usually the difference between a site that feels quick and one that does not.
Deployment and backups
Deployments that can be rolled back, and backups restored on a schedule — an untested backup is a hope, not a backup.
Monitoring
Uptime, certificate expiry and disk space, alerting to a human. Most outages we are called about were visible hours earlier.
What managed actually means here
Patching, certificate renewal, backups, monitoring and someone to call. Not a control panel and a wish of good luck.
We will also tell you when you do not need us. A small brochure site on decent shared hosting with a CDN in front is fine, and paying for a managed VPS to run it is money that would do more elsewhere.
The part people skip
Certificate expiry takes more sites offline than attacks do. It is automated, it is monitored, and it still fails when a renewal hook breaks quietly — so it gets an alert of its own.
The same goes for disk space. A log file nobody rotated has ended more afternoons than any hacker.
Sizing, and why bigger is usually not the answer
The instinct when a site is slow is to buy a larger server. It occasionally helps. More often the bottleneck is a missing database index, an unbounded query, or a plugin making an external call on every page load — and doubling the hardware doubles the bill while halving nothing.
We measure before recommending a size. Sometimes the honest answer is that your current server is fine and the application is the problem.
Backups you have actually restored
An untested backup is a belief. The failure mode is discovering, during the incident, that the database dump has been zero bytes for two months because a path changed.
Restores are tested on a schedule into a scratch environment, and the result is something you can see. It is the least interesting item on this page and the one you would miss most.
When we would move you off a VPS
A single server is simple, cheap and entirely adequate for most business sites. It is also a single point of failure, and there is a point where that stops being an acceptable trade — usually when downtime costs more per hour than the infrastructure costs per month.
At that point managed database services, load balancing and a second region start to earn their keep. Below it they are complexity you pay for and do not use, and we will say so rather than sell the larger architecture.
Security, proportionate to the target
Most compromises are not sophisticated. They are an unpatched plugin, a reused password, an exposed admin panel or a port left open on a public interface — and they are found by automated scanning, not by anyone targeting you.
So the basics carry most of the weight: patching on a schedule, least-privilege accounts, services bound to loopback rather than every interface, and admin surfaces that answer on one hostname instead of seven.
